Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

The official Evangelion Twitter account updated the Japanese box office total for Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time in anticipation of the film reaching 10 billion yen in a few weeks. The tweet also confirmed that the film will be leaving most major theaters in Japan on July 21 and moving to a limited theatrical run after finishing in IMAX theaters last Friday.

As of Sunday, July 4, Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time (and its updated “3.0+1.01” version) has made 9.75 billion yen (US$88.83 million) at the Japanese box office on the back of 6,393,000 tickets sold. This is a 150 million yen increase from the last time we checked in on the film on June 30 and a weekly increase of 180 million yen (US$1.61 million) from last Monday’s total. It is now very likely that Eva will likely reach the 10 billion yen milestone before it leaves Japanese theaters on July 21.

This has kept the film at the 9th highest-grossing anime film of all time in Japan under The Wind Rises, and moved it up to 39th on the all-time highest-grossing chart in Japan, between Japanese film The Adventures of Milo and Otis (known in Japan as Koneko Monogatari) at the 38th place and Mission Impossible 2 now at 40th.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 finally opened in Japan after being delayed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic on March 8, breaking franchise records on the first day and eventually becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise in Japan in less than a month, then the highest-grossing worldwide in 35 days, and finally the 9th highest-grossing anime film in Japan of all-time. It is the longest film in the franchise (not including compilations or special screenings). An updated version of the film, Evangelion 3.0+1.01, was released in Japanese theaters on June 12. The film streams internationally on Amazon Prime Video on August 13 in English subbed and dubbed formats.
