#ESPN won’t change ‘Monday Night’ booth with NFL Saturday a possibility

With the potential of Saturday NFL games in the event of college football being totally canceled in the fall, ESPN’s current plan is to stick with its newly created, but yet to be announced “Monday Night Football” team of Steve Levy, Brian Griese and Louis Riddick, The Post has learned.

That doesn’t mean that its No. 1 college football broadcast team of Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit won’t do multiple NFL games.

As The Post first reported in late April, the NFL gave itself flexibility to move games to Saturday if college football does not play due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If this were to happen, then ESPN/ABC would try to land Saturday games. Fowler and Herbstreit would be in line to call those telecasts.

The duo is already expected to be on the Giants-Steelers “Monday Night” opener on Sept. 14. Levy, Riddick and Griese will handle the second game of that night’s doubleheader between the Titans and Broncos.

With ESPN yet to make the Levy-Griese-Riddick team official, it could change course, but sources said it has no plans to do that, regardless of college football’s eventual decision.

In the event there is just some college football, then the NFL would likely forgo Saturdays, though there is no final decision yet.

At this point, the NFL can wait to see how or if it will implement Saturday games. With no fans expected at games, it has a lot of flexibility with the schedule, though it will need to protect CBS and Fox’s Sunday packages.

They own the rights to the games, while ESPN only pays for Monday nights and NBC pays for Sunday nights, so the NFL would have to figure out that equation.

The NFL has options. It may choose to have Saturday games, but maybe not every week.

That said, it seems feasible — with Fox and CBS not having college games under this college football canceled scenario — those two networks could move Sunday games to Saturday, while the NFL’s other two partners, ESPN/ABC and NBC, could be in line for a third game, perhaps on a rotating basis.

If college football were to be canceled, all the pieces line up for the NFL on Saturdays, which is why Levy, Griese and Riddick appear as if they won’t lose their jobs before it is announced that they have them.

Moves: CBS has changed up its third and fourth team NFL booth, according to sources. Kevin Harlan will now be teamed with Trent Green on the third team, while Greg Gumbel and Rich Gannon will be together on the fourth team. Jim Nantz and Tony Romo are the first team, while Ian Eagle and Charles Davis will be its No. 2 duo.

Clicker Books: Papa Clicker says of the many books written about Yogi Berra — and he’s read most of them — Jon Pessah’s, simply titled, “Yogi,” is one of the best. The book goes beyond Berra’s playing excellence and Yogi-isms by detailing how Berra was as a manager, a business executive and a beloved national figure. A 4.5 out of 5 rating for another book on No. 8.
