“#Eric Adams joins Democrats decrying racism ‘built into’ roads”
New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams is the latest New York politician to echo Pete Buttigieg’s claim racism was “built into” America’s infrastructure.
Adams on Wednesday endorsed a concept floated by Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Ritchie Torres the day before to “cap” the Cross-Bronx Expressway.
“Racism is built into our infrastructure, and we need to confront and combat it. Capping the Cross Bronx Expressway is just the start!” Adams tweeted, echoing the Transportation secretary’s claim on Monday that racism was a “simple reality” since American highways were often “built for the purpose of dividing a white and a black neighborhood.”
The statement came after the soon-to-be-mayor endorsed the concept during an interview on WNYC’s “The Brian Lehrer Show.”

During the interview, Adams noted that outgoing Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. has also suggested capping the Cross-Bronx — and that his former Deputy Borough President Diana Reyna had suggested capping the BQE.
“We do need to really roll back the Robert Moses division of our city and reunite neighborhoods and communities, and I love that idea,” Adams said, name-checking the city’s infamous twentieth century development czar.
“You cap it. You bring communities together. Green space. There’s some great things we can do with that,” he said.
