The production staff for BLUE GIANT has so far included Yuzuru Tachikawa (Mob Psycho 100 III chief director, Mob Psycho 100 and Mob Psycho 100 II director) as director and NUMBER 8 as the film’s screenwriter and scriptwriter. It has also been announced that internationally acclaimed jazz composer and pianist Hiromi Uehara will be composing the anime film’s musical score. NUT is handling the animation production.

BLUE GIANT is based on a manga series by Shinichi Ishizuka, which ran in Shogakukan’s Big Comic magazine from May 10, 2013 to August 25, 2016 under the Big Comics Special imprint. 10 tankoubon volumes have been released in total. The series was later followed up with a second follow-up titled Blue Giant Supreme in 2016 and a third series called Blue Giant Explorer in 2020. The latter is still serialized in Big Comic with six tankoubon volumes as of June 2022.

Seven Seas Entertainment has released the first manga series in English. It describes the manga’s story as:

Dai lived a normal high school life in Sendai: a city of hot summer days and rainy nights. Between basketball, part time jobs, and an uncertain future, something was missing. And that thing was music. With his days in senior year running out, Dai swears a heartfelt vow: “I’m gonna be the best jazz player in the world.”

But what do you need to be the best? Talent? Effort? A lucky break? Or maybe just a deep, pure love for music, and too much stubbornness to know when to quit.
