#Emu spotted running wild through two New Jersey towns

A wayward emu ran wild through two New Jersey towns Tuesday morning, before getting captured by animal control officials, reports said.

The towering bird, which can run up to 30 miles per hour, was first spotted strutting through the Hillcrest section of Paterson early in the day, NorthJersey.com reported.

One woman said something “from outer space” was prowling around outside, John DeCando, the city’s chief animal control officer, told the outlet.

“In 48 years I have never seen an emu” said DeCando, who has no idea where the bird came from.

The emu trotted two miles to nearby Totowa where it was spotted by Mike Rodriguez, an animal wrangler for the city of Paterson.

At first, he wasn’t quite sure what he was seeing.

“I was trying to figure out what it was,” Rodriguez told the outlet. “I didn’t want to touch him because of his nails.”

Using a snare pole and a blanket, Rodriguez snagged the bird and secured him in a cage, unharmed. While officials work to figure out where it came from, the emu will be brought to Franklin Lakes Animal Hospital for an evaluation and eventually, a sanctuary.

“It will be able to roam and live out the rest of its life,” DeCando said.
