Electronic Arts lays off hundreds of staff, cancels early-stage Titanfall universe extraction shooter

Electronic Arts has laid off between 300 and 400 employees across the company, including approximately 100 staff at Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi series developer Respawn Entertainment, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.
“As part of our continued focus on our long-term strategic priorities, we’ve made select changes within our organization that more effectively aligns teams and allocates resources in service of driving future growth,” said Electronic Arts spokesman Justin Higgs in a statement.
In a message on Twitter, Respawn Entertainment independently confirmed the layoffs, as well as the cancelation of two early-stage incubation projects.
“As we sharpen our focus for the future, we’ve made the decision to step away from two early-stage incubation projects and make some targeted team adjustments across Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi,” reads the statement. “These decisions aren’t easy, and we are deeply grateful to every teammate affected—their creativity and contributions have helped build Respawn into what it is today. We’re offering meaningful support to those impacted, including exploring new opportunities within [Electronic Arts].”
According to Bloomberg, one of those early-stage incubation projects was an unannounced Titanfall universe extraction shooter code-named “R7.” The second project was reportedly canceled earlier this year.
Respawn will continue development on the next installment in the Star Wars Jedi series—which is “aiming to raise the bar again for storytelling and gameplay”—as well as upcoming Apex Legends seasons and and an overhaul.
