#EasyJet passenger with chronic asthma claims he faced abuse over mask dilemma

An EasyJet passenger with chronic asthma says he was bulldozed by the crew and passengers into wearing a face mask on a plane — despite carrying valid credentials that exempted him from wearing one.

The man, who was only identified as Nick, said he brought a UK government-issued card last month to Jersey Airport in the Channel Islands that said he didn’t need to wear a mask since he suffers from asthma, the BBC reported.

But once he boarded the flight to London Gatwick Airport, the flight crew ordered him to put on a mask.

“The staff came to speak to me around six times. The 30-minute delay was seen as my fault and each visit whipped up more hostility among the passengers,” Nick said.

Nick then whipped out his phone camera and filmed the pilot ordering him to put on a mask or he “was off,” the outlet reported.

Meanwhile, he said he was subjected to a “storm of abuse” from the other travelers who laughed at and mocked him.

Eventually, he relented even though the mask caused him to hyperventilate during the hour-long flight.

“I would do anything to avoid wearing anything that restricts my breathing,” he said. “That’s more terrifying than being insulted by 100 passengers, but eventually I felt like I had no choice.”

EasyJet issued an apology to him in which they acknowledged that some passengers might not be able to wear masks.

“We have recently updated our policies in line with recent UK government guidance so that as well as a medical certificate, customers can alternatively provide a relevant document from a government website or lanyard,” the company said.

“We are sorry that this new policy was not recognized by the crew on this occasion.”
