#dvr questions everything on new song “Lowlife”

Kenny Beats produced the Scottish artist’s brand new single.

dvr is Dillon van Rensburg, a seventeen-year-old songwriter and producer who was discovered via Discord. Specifically it was producer Kenny Beats’ server on that platform that van Rensburg was sharing his music so it makes sense that the pair would connect on “Lowlife,” the teenager’s debut single on new label XL Recordings.

Mixing scruffy guitars with cavernous drums, “Lowlife” is a slacker anthem for those of us cursed with self-doubt and a tendency towards introspection. It’s not even that van Rensburg is alone, as he states “Got the girl but I’m still a loner.” Regardless, he can’t help but wonder “am I really what you want?”

Stumbling through his emotions as he moves forward in life, “Lowlife” is a relatable tale of uncertainty and self-destruction tied up in a scratchy indie pop tune. It comes accompanied by a video involving a lot of cardboard cut-outs and an unlikely breakfast eating champion. Check that out above.

Speaking about the track, van Rensburg told The FADER: “Made this like a year ago was originally gonna release it with just me but this young producer called Kenny hmu asking to work on it. I was hesitant but agreed, always good to give smaller producers some exposure.”

Kenny Beats, meanwhile, added: “From the first time I heard Dillon’s music, I knew there was something different about his perspective. Honored to be a part of the start of his career.”
