“#Driver spits on cyclist while driving in Queens bike lane, using phone”
“If you’re cycling in New York, you’ve got to assume drivers are going to be angry with you just for existing,” wedding photographer Kara McCurdy said of the encounter. “I was not expecting to be spat on.”
McCurdy, 27, of Astoria, said she was turning onto the city’s new Crescent Street bike lane at around 4:30 p.m. when she noticed a white BMW headed towards her in the freshly-painted two-way path.
McCurdy held her position, forcing the driver to stop.
“He slammed on the brakes and was visibly frustrated, and yelling at me,” she told The Post.
“I pulled out my phone. I was just going to take a video and send it to my friends. I was like, I’m going to post this on Instagram because this guy is being a jerk.”
The video shows the BMW in the bike lane, while other vehicles are lined up one-by-one to its right.
When the light turns green behind McCurdy, the driver veers around her through an opening in the bike lane — his phone up to his ear — and hocks his phlegm in her direction.
McCurdy said the saliva hit her body and bike handlebars.
“It’s always disgusting to be spat on, but in the middle of the pandemic it makes it more of a health and safety issue than a disgusting/disrespect thing,” she said.
“I biked home trying to use the handlebars as little as possible.”
