#Dr. Jill Biden’s Inauguration Day outfit added glam to day

For Wednesday’s inauguration, first lady Dr. Jill Biden wore a matching dress and overcoat by the New York City-based brand Markarian.

Amid a sea of purple-toned looks, Dr. Biden, 69, wore an “ocean blue” wool tweed look, according to a press release from the brand.

The color blue was chosen to reflect “trust, confidence, and stability,” the release read, and was “crafted by a small team in the heart of New York City’s Garment Center,” then hand-finished by designer Alexandra O’Neill at her West Village studio. She finished the look off with Jimmy Choo heels, a silk face mask also by Markarian and Wing & Weft gloves handmade in New York City.

With velvet trimmings on the coat’s lapel and an all-over dusting of Swarovski crystals (as well as a pearl-and-crystal encrusted neckline), the look’s overall effect was just the right touch of glimmer and glamour for the celebration.

Dr. Biden’s sartorial choices reflect her penchant not only for soothing hues such as aqua and pink done up in classic, streamlined silhouettes, but for American designers who commit to sustainability.

Markarian operates on a made-to-order basis so as to reduce waste. And the ensemble she wore to Tuesday evening’s ceremony honoring the 400,000 American lives lost to COVID-19 was designed by New York City’s Jonathan Cohen, a designer also at the forefront of sustainability in the fashion industry.

Dr. Biden has also repeated outfits, most notably including a dark green silk dress by sustainably minded designer Gabriela Hearst, which she wore for three appearances in the past few years, including a 2020 presidential debate.
