“#New Music Friday – New Albums From Toosii, MF DOOM + Czarface, Tee Grizzley + More”
The music doesn’t stop there; this week also brought new releases from Tee Grizzley and TY4FWM, the latest project from ALLBLACK.
Keep reading for DX’s complete coverage. We’ll see you in a week.
Tee Grizzley – Built For Whatever
This summer is turning into the season of Detroit. Only a few weeks have passed since Michigan rapper Tee Grizzley was featured on Lil Yachty’s critically acclaimed Michigan Boat Boy, but Grizzley is still hungry for more as proven by Built For Whatever. The link between Chicago and Detroit grow stronger on Built For Whatever, as the “First Day Out” rapper tapped Lil Durk, G Herbo and the late King Von for the project. “Never Bend Never Fold” with G Herbo, the project’s lead single, sets the tone for Built For Whatever as Grizzley issues grimy, off-kilter bars over trunk-rattling production.
MF DOOM & Czarface – Super What?
Three years have passed since the release of Czarface Meets Metal Face, a collaboration of epic proportions between Czarface (comprised of Wu-Tang Clan’s Inspectah Deck and the Boston duo of 7L and Esoteric) and the late, great MF DOOM. In the wake of DOOM’s passing in October of 2020, Super What? the latest joint album, feels like a blessing. There are surely hundreds of loosie DOOM tracks stored on the hard drives of producers and artists across the world, but whether those songs will ever see the light of day remains unclear. On Super What? DOOM’s witty pen and godly howl pierce through thick production like rays of sun through dense clouds.
Toosii – Thank You For Believing
Toosii made HipHopDX’s Rising Stars list for his ability to translate deeply human emotions into sweeping tunes which captivate an audience of all ages, whether they fan directly relate to the tribulations of Toosii or not. Thank You For Believing, the latest from the Syracuse-born, Raleigh-based rapper comes directly after Poetic Pain, Toosii’s release from last Fall which featured the Summer Walker assisted “Love Cycle,” one of the MC’s highest-performing tracks in his early career. Thank You For Believing also features verses from Latto, DaBaby and Key Glock.
L’Orange & Namir Blade – Imaginary Everything
Producer L’Orange and rapper Namir Blade have come together for Imaginary Everything arriving with Mello Music Group. “Pipe Dream,” the lead single from Imaginary Everything was released Thursday, May 6th, featuring Solemn Brigham. As Namir Blade’s voice tumbles across L’Orange’s revamped boom-bap production style, a new world is unveiled, full of vivid storytelling and crisp sonics. Fly Anakin, Quelle Chris and Marlow also add verses to the project’s universe, but it’s the chemistry between L’Orange and Blade that make Imaginary Everything one of the week’s best releases.
Lil Poppa – Blessed, I Guess
The city of Jacksonville, Florida has found its way into the news frequently over the past few months in wake of a seemingly endless stream of rap beef, but if you step aside from the drama, you’ll find artists like Lil Poppa who has been steadily gaining traction. Blessed, I Guess, Poppa’s latest, comes just weeks after the album’s lead single, “A.M. Flights” which featured DX Rising Star Toosii. Over the fifteen tracks, which Poppa handles primarily alone, the “Eternal Living” rapper proves the hype is warranted.
