#Dominic Smith heroics propel Mets to comeback win over Yankees

Dom Smith hit the game-winning homer and the Yankees’ bullpen blew its second lead in as many games and the Mets’ relievers held the Bombers scoreless for four innings in a stunning 6-4 comeback win in the first game of a seven-inning doubleheader Friday in The Bronx.

Indeed, 2020 really is full of surprises.

The Subway Series finally got underway Friday and the Yankees appeared to be on the verge of their first win since Aug. 17.

Instead, Chad Green suffered his second straight meltdown, as the Mets teed off three times against Green, with Pete Alonso providing a three-run shot to tie it. And it was Smith’s game-winning blast, on a day MLB honored Jackie Robinson day, that proved to be the difference for the Mets.

A day after the Mets and much of the rest of Major League Baseball opted not to play in an attempt to protest racial injustice, there was no talk of another day of postponements.

Instead, the teams took the field on Jackie Robinson Day and the Yankees quickly took a four-run lead.

Jordan Montgomery started the sixth and allowed consecutive singles to J.D. Davis and Michael Conforto, which ended the left-hander’s outing.

Aaron Boone went to Green, who had given up a game-winning homer to Freddie Freeman in his previous outing in Atlanta.

On Friday, he first faced Alonso, who was hitless in his previous 13 at-bats. Alonso worked a full count and drilled his sixth homer of the season, a three-run shot to dead center to tie the game at 4-4.

Green got Robinson Cano and Wilson Ramos before Smith went deep to give the Mets their first lead. Jake Marisnick followed with another homer to make it 6-4 and send the Yankees to their sixth straight loss — their longest since they dropped seven in a row in 2017.

Montgomery didn’t give up a run until the fifth. By then the Yankees had built a 4-0 lead thanks in part to a run-scoring double by Clint Frazier in the first and a two-run shot by Frazier in the second. Both came against right-hander Michael Wacha, who was making his first start since being shelved with right shoulder inflammation.

Luke Voit led off the bottom of the first with a single and scored when Frazier followed with a double to right-center.

Brett Gardner, hitting third, then laid down a perfect bunt for a single that moved Frazier to third.

Wacha then went to a full count on Gary Sanchez and threw a wild pitch on ball four, allowing Frazier to race home to make it 2-0.

The Mets averted further damage when Wacha rebounded to retire Mike Ford, Miguel Andujar and Estevan Florial in what was Florial’s first MLB plate appearance.

As Montgomery cruised, the Yankee lineup got to Wacha again in the second, this time with two outs. After Wacha got Thairo Estrada and Tyler Wade to start the inning, he was burned by the top of the lineup again.

This time, Voit doubled down the left-field line and Frazier hit an opposite field homer to right to give the Yankees a 4-0 lead.

Frazier, who entered the game in a 1-for-15 slide, came back to life Friday.

He also walked in the fourth, when the Yankees loaded the bases with two out against Walker Lockett before Sanchez whiffed to end the threat.

The Mets finally got on the board in the fifth, thanks in part to some shoddy defense at third by Andujar, who was filling in for the injured Gio Urshela.

Montgomery hit Smith with a pitch with two out before Marisnick hit a grounder to third that Andujar couldn’t handle on the backhand. Andujar then threw wildly to first, allowing Smith to get to third.

That play came back to bite the Yankees, as Montgomery’s wild pitch let Smith score the Mets’ first run, but Montgomery got out of the inning without further damage.

The Yankees got two runners on with two outs in the sixth against Dellin Betances, as the ex-Yankee hit Frazier and walked Gardner. Sanchez popped to center, as his struggles continued.

Edwin Diaz closed it out in the seventh.
