Audiences always seem to fall for toxic men, but it’s Netflix who continues to provide them

From You‘s Joe Goldberg to the 365 Days Massimo, Netflix‘s biggest hits all have one thing in common, and that’s toxic men. Instead of this trend dying off and adjusting to the times, the streaming titan seems to deliver more and more dangerous men and promote toxic masculinity.

Problematic men have been around since the beginning of time. Eventually, it became normal. Ross from Friends is a great example. A few saw it back then, but, love him or hate him, we can all see it now.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of Friends and always will be, but times are changing. Or are they? Not if Netflix has anything to say about it.

Netflix’s history with toxic men

You is one of Netflix’s most popular shows and the entire plot is about a man, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), who stalks woman he supposedly “fall in love” with. Yet, when the show debuted, Joe became everyone’s latest crush.

Conversations With A Killer: Ted Bundy Tapes is another fine example. Though it’s a documentary and not based on a character, that didn’t stop Netflix viewers from falling for Ted Bundy’s charm. The streaming titan even followed up with Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, starring Zac Efron.

13 Reasons Why and Elite are other great examples, but the latest is 365 Days, an erotic film. Massimo (Michele Morrone) essentially kidnaps a woman and gives her 365 days to fall in love with him. Enough said! Have you watched the controversial movie?

What do you think about the many toxic men on Netflix? Will the trend die down any time soon? What are other shows you know about with toxic men?
