#Dodgers’ Andrew Toles arrested after sleeping behind Florida airport

Andrew Toles’ once-promising career has devolved into a sad tale that has seen him go from a major league player to homeless and now behind bars.

On Monday, the former Dodger was found asleep behind a Federal Express building at the Key West Airport in Florida, according to the Miami Herald. After given several chances by police to move, he wouldn’t and was arrested on June 22, charged with a misdemeanor charge of trespassing. His address was listed as the “streets of Key West” and all he had with him was a black book bag, police said.

It’s a sad fall from where Toles was in 2016, the Dodgers’ starting left fielder in the playoffs. It was quite a year, Toles going from Single-A to the big leagues despite battles with depression and anxiety, as NBC LA illustrated. But his career fell off from there. He tore his ACL in 2017 and didn’t play much in 2018 as he tried to return from the injury. Toles, a career .286 hitter in the majors, was a no-show for spring training in 2019 and left the organization in May for personal reasons, according to reports. He’s still on the Dodgers’ restricted list.

Originally drafted by the Rays in the third round in 2012 out of Chipola College in Florida, he was Tampa’s Minor League Player of the Year in 2013. But by 2015, he was out of the organization. Disciplinary reasons were given as the explanation.

“He was imperfect, and he began to deal with crippling anxiety,” Pedro Maura of The Athletic wrote in 2018. “He struggled to sleep. Regularly, he showed up late to the ballpark and committed mental mistakes on the field, and regularly he heard from manager Jared Sandberg.”

He spent time working at a grocery store and afterward in a mental health facility, before finding a new home with the Dodgers. But now, at the age of 28, Toles may have hit rock bottom. He has a court date set for July 2, the Miami Herald reported, and may not have a place to live whenever he does get out of the Stock Island Detention Center.
