#DNC night 2 kicks off with keynote address from 17 ‘rising stars’

Night two of the 2020 Democratic National Convention kicked off on Tuesday night with a keynote speaker — well, 17 of them.

Instead of designating one rising star to deliver the address — like Mario Cuomo in 1984 and Barack Obama in 2004 — Democrats picked 17 “next generation of party leaders” from across the country to speak in a video mashup.

“There is one person that is looking out for us — all of us,” they said in unison. “And that is Joe Biden.”

The speakers were largely young representatives from swing states, such as Pennsylvania State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta and Florida’s agriculture commissioner Nikki Fried.

The list also included Stacey Abrams, who lost her bid for Georgia governor in 2018 and considered a 2020 presidential run herself.

She closed out the clip, saying: “This year’s choice could not be more clear. We know Joe Biden. America, we need Joe Biden.”

The joint address was meant to “offer a diversity of different ideas and perspectives on how to move America forward,” organizers said in a news release.

“They will all speak to the future we’re building together — a future with Joe Biden at the helm.”

Notably absent among the rising stars was progressive firebrand New York lawmaker Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

She was given a 60-second slot to speak later on in the night, angering supporters who started a petition to get her more air time.
