The 20-year veteran, Detective James Andreula, who was assigned to the Midtown North Detective Squad, said he has been “overwhelmed” with the outpouring of support since his family got the news just before the pandemic COVID hit New York City.
When presented with the check Thursday afternoon at the Midtown North Precinct house, Andreula told his fellow officers he couldn’t begin to explain how much the money meant to him and his family.
The group’s founder Sgt. Joe Imperatrice told The Post this was an example of the “officers and community coming together…to make the world a better place.”
“We have seen the daily attack on police officers for months now,” Imperatrice said. “[We are] told how bad officers are. This small act of kindness shows that is the furthest from the truth. Coming together from all walks of life to help a family going through the worst of times.”
Imperatrice said he was asked to help raise money for the detective, who just recently put in his retirement to care for his wife, and set up a nationwide fundraiser to help cover some of the medical costs.
Andreula and his wife, who is undergoing treatment in Texas, have four young kids together.
