Diamondbacks pitcher Mike Leake is going to sit out of the 60-game season amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The 32-year-old right-hander was listed on the Diamondbacks’ 60-player pool that the club released earlier on Monday, with workouts for a second spring training set to begin on Friday, but the pending free agent has decided against it.
“During this global pandemic, Mike and his family had many discussions about playing this season,” Leake’s agent, Danny Horwits, wrote in a statement obtained by The Post’s Joel Sherman. “They took countless factors into consideration, many of which are personal to him and his family. After thorough consideration, he has chosen to opt out of playing in 2020. This was not an easy decision for Mike. He wishes the best of luck and health for his Diamondback teammates this season and he’s looking forward to 2021.”
Leake is a 10-year veteran and went 12-11 with a 4.29 ERA last year, which he split between the Mariners and Diamondbacks. He’s in the final year of a five-year, $80 million contract and will pass up about $5.6 million in an adjusted 60-game salary by sitting out.
