#Detective Conan Manga Hits 1111 Chapters, Anniversary Plan Launched

With the April 19 release of Weekly Shonen Sunday’s 21st 2023 issue. Goushou Aoyama‘s long-running Detective Conan manga has now hit a chapter count of 1111.

As part of the anniversary plan to commemorate the milestone, a display featuring 11 bricks with carvings of various notable scenes from the series (the brick theme is inspired by the design of the manga’s tankoubon covers) is available for viewing at the Shogakukan building’s window display until April 25 at 6PM JST. Later, there will be a campaign through which 11 lucky winners will receive said bricks. A key visual based on the “brick art” theme was released as well.

Aside from bricks, the commemoration plan also includes the display of posters of Conan in his original Shinichi Kudo form at four stations in Shutoken and four bus stops in Tokyo (these were put up on the 17th). The exact locations have to be figured out by fans, with hints provided on the official Detective Conan Twitter account. The Shutoken posters have a light blue background and a landscape orientation while the Tokyo posters feature a dark blue and a portrait orientation.

Additionally, there are special Detective Conan stickers featuring eight of the manga’s characters included with Weekly Shonen Sunday 21.

Detective Conan, published as Case Closed by Viz Media, began in 1994 and has 103 tankoubon volumes as of April 2023. An anime series adaptation produced by TMS Entertainment began in 1996 and is still ongoing.

April 14 saw the Japanese premiere of Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine, the 26th anime movie in the franchise. Kurogane no Submarine earned 3.146 billion yen (~US$23.34 million) in its opening weekend, the biggest opening gross of the year in Japan so far. Four Detective Conan movies sit on the country’s list of highest-grossing movies, with 2022’s Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween ranked at 45th with a total gross of 9.78 billion yen (~US$732.58 million).
