It seems the competition of Gintama was no match for the runaway train that is Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train, with the anime film once again dominating the Japanese box office and keeping the number one slot as the Ufotable-produced film reaches its 101st day in theaters. So far, the record-breaking film has made over 36.50 billion yen (US$351.6 million) at the Japanese box office on the back of 26.67 million tickets sold.
Over the last weekend, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train once again took the top spot against its nearest competitor, Gintama: THE FINAL, bringing in around 400 million yen (US$3.85 million) over the last week. Sales for the anime film has slowed significantly since the State of Emergency declaration has requested cinemas to limit their operating hours, making the last showing of the day needing to be finished before 8 PM. But this isn't just Demon Slayer being affected, films across the board in Japan are bringing in less money overall.

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train opened in Japanese cinemas on October 16 and had the best opening weekend in Japanese cinema history, becoming the highest-grossing film in Japanese theaters ever. A 4DX version of the film was be released in Japan on December 26. You can read our review of the film here. The Ufotable-produced anime film continues to adapt the manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge, which saw a TV anime series adaptation in 2019. The film is scheduled to be released in the west in early 2021. The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba TV anime series streamed on Crunchyroll as it aired.
