Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVE Mugen Train

After 19 years, the Japanese domestic movie box office has a brand new number one film; Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVE Mugen Train. After being widely predicted to take the top spot from the Studio Ghibli classic film Spirited Away, Demon Slayer finally did so on Saturday, December 26. With 4DX screenings of the anime film adaptation of Koyoharu Gotouge's manga starting on the same day, the sun is the limit for Demon Slayer's box office run.

Mugen Train has so far made 32,478,895,850 yen (US$313,513,909) at the Japanese box office in 73 days, making it also the first film in Japanese to reach 32 billion yen (US$309 million) at the Japanese box office on the back of 24,049,907 admissions. Even though Spirited Away isn't the number one film at the Japanese box office (even with the 2020 re-release factored in) still holds the record for ticket sales at 24.28 million (including re-releases), due to the lower costs of tickets in 2001/2002, as well as not having IMAX and 4DX screenings, which typically have a higher ticket cost than regular screenings.

Worldwide, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is still behind Tenet as the 5th highest-grossing of 2020 worldwide, and the highest-grossing animated film of the year. On the worldwide top anime film charts, Demon Slayer is still behind Spirited Away and Your Name at US$355,467,056 and US$358,331,458 respectively. But with Mugen Train still to open in China early next year and scheduled for North America in "early 2021", there's no doubt that the Aniplex/Toho anime film will become the number one anime film of all time when these runs are finished.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train opened in Japanese cinemas on October 16 and had the best opening weekend in Japanese cinema history. A 4DX version of the film was be released in Japan on December 26. You can read our review of the film here. The Ufotable-produced anime film continues to adapt the manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge, which saw a TV anime series adaptation in 2019. The film is scheduled to be released in the west in early 2021. The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba TV anime series streamed on Crunchyroll as it aired.
