As predicted last week, it seems the Gintama: THE FINAL anime film was only a temporary set back to the juggernaut engine that is Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train, which once again came in at number one over the weekend at the Japanese box office with the "final" Gintama anime film coming in a slight second.

Mantan Web reported today that in the 14th week of cinema showings, Mugen Train returned to the top of the Japanese box office. The Weekly Shonen Jump adaptation took the top spots for a record-breaking 12 weeks before Gintama: THE FINAL came in a stole the crown for a short amount of time with Demon Slayer taking back the crown in just a weekend.

Because the Japanese box office is based on ticket sales rather than box office takings, Demon Slayer actually came out on top last weekend based on revenue but lost out due to attendance. Demon Slayer is currently being run in more expensive cinema formats (4DX, IMAX) than Gintama: THE FINAL, which just on traditional screens. Last week saw the use of Demon Slayer-based benefits given out to those going to see Gintama: THE FINAL, which will return in February.

After the delay of Evangelion 3.0+1.0, if Gintama: THE FINAL can't hold off Demon Slayer, then it's likely Ufotable film will continue to dominate the Japanese box office until at least February.

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train opened in Japanese cinemas on October 16 and had the best opening weekend in Japanese cinema history, becoming the highest-grossing film in Japanese theaters ever. A 4DX version of the film was be released in Japan on December 26. You can read our review of the film here. The Ufotable-produced anime film continues to adapt the manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge, which saw a TV anime series adaptation in 2019. The film is scheduled to be released in the west in early 2021. The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba TV anime series streamed on Crunchyroll as it aired.
