Barcelona 2019-20 season in review

Barcelona faltered down the stretch in the La Liga title race, losing out to Real Madrid before the final week. It was not even that close in the UCL, being demolished 8-2 in one game by eventual winners’ Bayern Munich.

This set the club into crisis, sacking manager Quique Setién and hiring Ronald Koeman from the Dutch men’s national team. Lionel Messi announced his intentions to leave the only club he has ever known professionally, citing a contract clause that allows him to leave at the end of the 2019-20 season for free.

The story gets far too legal from here on out, with the Barca board and Messi’s team arguing about whether the clause was intended for the end of the season, or the end of June, in regards to the delay of this season due to the coronavirus pandemic. Eventually La Liga sided with the club, and not wanting to go to court with the club he loves, Messi decided to stay.

Barcelona spent so much of the transfer window worrying about keeping Messi for a year, there wasn’t any time spent on improving the team for this next season. All the same deficiencies that have led to Barcelona’s problems over the years still persist, but the sense around the club is the fans are just happy to have Messi for one last season, to show appreciation for the player their fans (and many around the world) consider to be the greatest of all time.

Barcelona vs. Villarreal: Preview

Barcelona begins its season on Sunday, in turmoil once again. Messi has been forced to stay at the club for at least another season, but Luis Suárez has signed for Atlético Madrid, and the clubs are still arguing over the transfer fee.

The bad blood between Barca and Atléti goes back to the Antoine Griezmann saga, and this is shaping up to be part two. Barcelona needs to attempt to focus this weekend though, or Villarreal will make this year worse than it already is.
