The 2020 presidential hopeful will leave his Wilmington, Delaware home Monday afternoon to deliver remarks in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on “whether voters feel safe in Donald Trump’s America.”
The former vice president will also “offer a different vision for a better future in Joe Biden’s America” in the speech.
Biden’s remarks come as the nation watches in fear as violence and looting have overtaken the cities of Portland, Oregon and Kenosha, Wisconsin, among others.
Kenosha, a small city, is the home to Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old black man who was shot seven times by police in front of three of his young children last Sunday.
Blake’s shooting became part of a larger national conversation on police brutality against minorities that has permeated society since the murder of George Floyd, an unarmed black man killed by a police officer in May.
Amid protests, violence has erupted in Portland and Kenosha, where President Trump sent in the National Guard and federal agents last week to quell the unrest.
Trump will visit the Wisconsin city on Tuesday, where he will meet with local law enforcement.
On Monday, Biden will condemn the violence in the streets, according to the New York Times.
The paper also reports that he will argue that the current commander-in-chief “is seeking to change the subject from the coronavirus and economic challenges the country faces.”
Biden and the Democratic party faced criticism from Republicans for not condemning the violence taking place amid protests during the Democratic National Convention.
Since then, however, he has denounced the unrest in both Portland and Kenosha.
“The deadly violence we saw overnight in Portland is unacceptable,” Biden said Sunday on his campaign website.
“Shooting in the streets of a great American city is unacceptable. I condemn this violence unequivocally. I condemn violence of every kind by anyone, whether on the left or the right. And I challenge Donald Trump to do the same.”
Further details of Biden’s Monday speech were not immediately made available.
Biden’s out-of-state trip also comes amid scrutiny that the former vice president was keeping the campaign too close to home, despite the coronavirus pandemic.
The former vice president has campaigned from his Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware homes since the pandemic forced Americans into lockdown in March, the same time he scooped up Democratic nomination.
Following the conclusion of their fully virtual Democratic convention, Biden said that his team was working on getting the campaign back on the trail, especially in swing states.
“One of the things we’re thinking about is I’m going to be going up into Wisconsin, and Minnesota, spending time in Pennsylvania, out in Arizona,” Biden said during a virtual fundraiser Thursday.
“What we’re working on is how I get out. I’m going to be traveling throughout the country where I can do it consistent with the state rules about how many people can be assembled.”
In reaction to the news of Biden going to Pennsylvania, President Trump tweeted that his 2020 rival must be concerned over closing poll numbers.
“Rushing him out of basement after seeing some very disturbing numbers. Don’t worry, he’ll go back to basement soon!” the commander-in-chief wrote on the social media platform.
