#Dem Socialists plot ‘tax the rich’ rally outside Bloomberg’s townhouse

Leftists are planning to hold a rally outside Mike Bloomberg’s townhouse Saturday to demand a Green New Deal and higher taxes on the rich — despite the former mayor having backed an income tax surcharge on the wealthy and his huge donations to fight climate change.

“Join our Tax the Rich Rally at Bloomberg’s Mansion!” a notice from the Democratic Socialist of New York about the protest states.

“The West is on fire, the COVID crisis continues to unfold with no end and sight, and New York’s billionaires are still getting richer. We need a Green New Deal now, and we need to fund it by taxing the rich,” it adds.

But the DSA’s targeting of Bloomberg has left people close to the former mayor scratching their heads.

“You can pick a fight with Mike on some issues — but questioning his support for climate change or supporting higher taxes on the wealthy are not among them,” a Bloomberg insider said.

Bloomberg has spent a chunk of his personal fortune on climate change initiatives to promote green energy and curb reliance on greenhouse gas-spewing, carbon based fossil fuels — including $500 million to phase-out dirty coal power plants.

He previously served as the United Nation’s special envoy on Cities and Climate Change and Bloomberg Philanthropies sponsors or supports seven different climate change programs.

The democratic socialists also appear to be preaching to the choir on taxes.

Bloomberg in February unveiled a plan that recommended a 5% surtax on incomes above $5 million a year and rolling back President Trump’s corporate tax cuts.

Bloomberg, the founder of Bloomberg LP who has a net worth estimated at $59 billion, said then that “it is only right” that he and other wealthy Americans pay more in taxes.

In a e-mail message promoting the rally, the DSA message specifically urges Gov. Andrew Cuomo to tax “the richest New Yorkers.”

Earlier Wednesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez also called on Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio to raise taxes to fund schools.

The Post reported on Tuesday that the NYC branch of Democratic Socialists is also plotting to back a slate of like-minded leftist candidates to win control of the City Council next year to push its big-government, anti-capitalist agenda.
