#Debate? No, Mike Pompeo, tour a school with me and see what teachers really do

“Debate? No, Mike Pompeo, tour a school with me and see what teachers really do”

It’s tough to stand out in the GOP presidential scrum, but my 1.7 million members and I had a good eye roll last week when Mike Pompeo decided that calling me “the most dangerous person in the world” was his surest path to the White House.

Not Russian President Vladimir Putin, not North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, not Chinese President Xi Jinping, but the head of an education and health-care union. All his glad-handing of dictators during his time at President Donald Trump’s State Department had apparently convinced him that the real enemy is a native New Yorker.

I’m not sure who’s writing Pompeo’s material, but his bully-boy act has done wonders for our union’s profile. We even got T-shirts printed!

It reminded me of when Sen. Al D’Amato thought insulting teachers was the way to beat then-Congressman, now-Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

By this week, on the same day Oath Keeper Stewart Rhodes was convicted of sedition, Pompeo had downgraded my dangerousness, in a column for The Post, to merely the most dangerous person in the United States.

His spite might be childish and petty, but what’s truly outrageous are the other things he said: calling what educators do “filth” and “propaganda.” In doing so, he personally insulted the nation builders of the very American democracy he claims to cherish.

Our teachers give their all for their students, showing up every day for their kids, partnering with parents and helping the next generation fulfill their dreams.

Pompeo’s a West Point boy; he knows what he’s doing is wrong and that this type of rhetoric is intended to stoke fear and anger. But as the midterm elections showed, it’s rarely a good political strategy to attack our public schools, especially when they’re the most popular they’ve ever been

Ironically, his heroes Thomas Jefferson and James Madison were huge believers in public education. Pompeo has spent his life shilling for special interests and attacking public institutions so his billionaire donors can get a tax break — or even better, divert more taxpayer cash into their own hands. No wonder he’s known as the “congressman from Koch.”

He never showed any interest in education at the State Department — unlike previous secretaries. Even his unpopular Cabinet colleague Betsy DeVos toured public schools with me in Ohio. She witnessed firsthand the remarkable work that happens in millions of classrooms — whether it’s teaching literacy, math, science, civics, art or skills for college and career.

We agree with Pompeo that literacy is crucial — that’s why this year alone we have given out 1 million books to promote the joy of reading, instead of banning them, as his MAGA pals want to do. And in McDowell County, W.Va., one of the poorest counties in the nation, we launched a public-private partnership that has boosted high-school graduation rates, raised academic proficiency and helped stem the teacher shortage by building housing for teachers.

Now, as if it weren’t enough to live rent-free in his head, Pompeo wants to “debate” me as though I were a candidate running against him. If he wants to engage in a real discussion about how best to strengthen public education or the importance of treating educators with respect, I invite him to join me in a visit to one of America’s 100,000 public schools to learn a thing or two.

In the meantime, teachers will not be a prop for his pathetic presidential ambitions. Instead, we’ll be doing the serious work of helping our nation’s kids, families and communities recover and thrive.
