Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday night claimed he was unaware the Democratic National Convention was taking place this week.
The mayor on NY1 said he’s been so preoccupied with guiding the city through the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic that the nominating convention simply slipped his mind.
“I really didn’t even know the convention was coming up this week, is the truth,” de Blasio said when asked on “Inside City Hall” why he wasn’t invited to speak.
“We have just extraordinary challenges we’re working on right here, keep this health situation good, get ready for schools, try and reopen our economy. Politics is not my focus right now,” Hizzoner told host Errol Louis.
Monday night marks the first night of the four-day convention that will culminate Thursday with the party’s nomination of former Vice President Joe Biden.
Louis asked de Blasio, who had a short-lived and underwhelming run for president, if he’d been asked by Biden’s team to campaign ahead of Election Day.
“No,” de Blasio said, adding, “I would do anything they need, if they need anything.
“But right now, again, I’ve got a pretty profound mission right here, focusing on the health and safety of New Yorkers. That’s where I’m going to be.”
