In celebration of “Schitt’s Creek’s” sweeping (and historic) victories at the 2020 Emmys on Sunday night, how about a nod to the impeccable, if not melodramatic, style of David Rose?
The character played by the show’s creator, Daniel Levy, 37, is known for his Goth-chic aesthetic amid the town of Schitt’s Creek’s blanket of plaid and utilitarianism. Let’s just say the Blouse Barn was not prepared for these looks. Levy supervises the costume department alongside designer Debra Hanson.
And while his mother Moira, played by a mysteriously accented Catherine O’Hara, often upstages her son on the show, David’s style deserves its own accolades — especially after he paid homage to it with his Emmys ensemble Sunday night. Here’s a look at the fashion icon’s most scene-stealing moments.
The zipper sweater
David loves a good sweater, from wild patterns to sleek looks that look like they came straight from New York Fashion Week. One of his first looks in Season 1 was a form-fitting black sweater with zippers by his shoulders. “I’m trying very hard not to connect with people right now,” he said while wearing it.
Mennonite time
In Season 2, David escapes to a Mennonite farm to steal time away from Johnny, Alexis and Moira. His look there is truly iconic, pairing large sunglasses with a Helmut Lang mohawk sweatshirt in a field while he does chores. “I knew that it had the right amount of insanity to make the character look completely absurd in his surroundings,” Levy told Vogue in 2018.
Simply ‘The Best’
In the Season 4 episode “Open Mic,” David serenades Patrick (Noah Reid) with a rendition of Tina Turner’s “The Best.” He does it while clad in the fierce look of a star-spangled jacket.
Take a hike
In Season 5 episode “The Hike,” David and Patrick go on a romantic hike together. David’s outfit for the great outdoors? Forget athletic wear, he goes for an all-black number that includes his trademark drop-crotch pants.
The flame sweater
In the same Season 4 episode where he sings “The Best,” David and Patrick’s relationship really starts to ignite. Naturally, he needs an appropriate look for that, so what could be better than a sweater covered in a bright orange flame pattern?
“Wild aloof rebel”
In the Season 4 episode “Baby Sprinkle,” David throws a last-minute baby shower for Jocelyn. Naturally, he does it in style, wearing a long-sleeved T-shirt with the words “wild aloof rebel” emblazoned across the chest.
Kilt up
In the sixth and final season, while planning his wedding to Patrick, David dons a kilt. In the show, he pairs the kilt with not an understated T-shirt or blazer, but with a fuzzy black sweater.
“Schitt’s Creek” is currently available on Netflix.
