“#Dave Chappelle to Produce Four New Comedy Specials for Netflix”
Chappelle will appear in Earthquake: Legendary to personally introduce the comedian, as he will do with the other four specials. The first two specials released feature Chappelle’s colleagues from DC, with Donnell Rawlings also announced for the second special. Rawlings’ special date will be announced at a future time. The other two comedians haven’t yet been named, but like Earthquake and Rawlings, it’s said that they are comedians who’ve been in the comedy game for over 30 years.
“I’ve been doing this a long time and comedians like Quake and Donnell are not only friends but have inspired my own career,” Chappelle said in a statement, via Netflix. “Anyone in the comedy community knows these names and knows their time to shine is long overdue. I am proud to be a part of this moment.”
Emmy and Grammy award winner Stan Lathan directs Earthquake: Legendary. Earthquake also executive produced alongside Chappelle, Lathan, Rikki Hughes, and Jermaine Smith.
Earthquake Can Also Be Seen in Various TV Roles
Earthquake currently appears in recurring roles on The Neighborhood for CBS, Johnson for the Bounce network, and South Side for HBO Max. The comedian has also landed a development deal for a project with the CBS network. Additionally, he is in his fourth season as the host of Quakeshouse, the “uber-popular” radio show for Sirius XM Channel 96, produced by Kevin Hart’s LOL Radio Network.
Earthquake will be introduced at a time when there’s still continued controversy over Dave Chappelle and his Netflix specials. Ultimately, Netflix stood by Chappelle by refusing to pull his specials despite backlash over many of its jokes. Of course, committing to a new series of specials produced by Chappelle doubles down on that support. Netflix’s Ted Sarandos has said that the company made some mistakes with the handling of the situation but would continue to maintain their partnership with Chappelle.
“Chappelle is one of the most popular stand-up comedians today, and we have a long standing deal with him,” a memo sent to staffers by Sarandos read. “His last special Sticks & Stones, also controversial, is our most watched, stickiest and most award winning stand-up special to date. As with our other talent, we work hard to support their creative freedom – even though this means there will always be content on Netflix some people believe is harmful.”
Earthquake: Legendary will start streaming on Netflix on Feb. 28. The Closer, Chappelle’s latest special released in 2021 that seemed to generate the most backlash for him yet, can be watched now on the streamer alongside his previous Netflix specials. You can sign up at Netflix.com.
