“Chicago! We’re just chilling,” said a man in an opened-shirt as he filmed the giggly group high above the Chicago River in a clip viewed more than 8.5 million times Wednesday.
“On a bridge. That’s raised!” says one of two women in the group, laughing as the camera pans to show an apparent sheer drop down the raised section of the Windy City’s Franklin-Orleans Street bridge.
The video went viral amid claims that the bridge — one of those raised to stop looters pouring into the downtown shopping district — was raised “not knowing a group was still crossing.”
“Help never came this is them on the way down,” a follow-up said, showing some of the group seemingly sliding back down the bridge.
However, a city official told the Chicago Tribune that “the claim that they were on the bridge when it was raised is not credible” and that the group climbed up the raised bridge using the railings.
Police are now working to hold them “accountable for trespassing,” said Michael Claffey, a rep for the city’s Department of Transportation which controls the bridges.
Claffey slammed the daredevils’ “extremely reckless and potentially deadly behavior.”
A police spokeswoman, Maggie Huynh, told the Chicago Sun-Times that the transportation department and police only “became aware of the incident through the video posted to social.”
“There were no calls of service to the bridge during this time frame,” Huynh insisted.
The reports — which did not name any of the accused trespassers — said no one involved replied to requests for comment.
