American tennis player Danielle Collins has been dismissed from the World TeamTennis event for breaching coronavirus protocols just over a month after she heavily criticized Novak Djokovic, the men’s world No. 1, for saying the proposed US Open safety protocols were too “extreme” to play under.

“We have dismissed Danielle Collins… for the remainder of the 2020 World TeamTennis season after breaking our COVID-19 protocols and leaving The Greenbrier Resort and the state of West Virginia,” WTT chief executive Carlos Silva said in a statement. “The protocols have been put in place and communicated numerous times to protect the health and safety of our players, coaches and staff which are of utmost importance to WTT.”

The three-week WTT tournament is one of the only sports events going on in the US that is currently allowing fans to attend. Collins had been competing for the Orlando Storm before tournament officials confirmed she had been asked to leave Tuesday due to traveling across state lines and out of the tournament bubble.

Last month, Collins blasted Djokovic for saying he might not compete in the US Open because it would be “impossible” to play under the proposed safety protocols. The 26-year-old Collins pointed out how most players haven’t been able to make money since February and Djokovic, who has collected more money in tennis than any player in the sport’s history, wasn’t supportive of going ahead with the tournament.

“Here we have an awesome opportunity with the US Open talking about proceeding forward with the event, with some strict safety precautions to make sure all players feel safe and their health is put first. This is a massive opportunity for players to start making money again, and here we have the top player in the world saying only being able to bring one person with [him] will be too difficult be able to bring his entourage,” wrote Collins, a 2019 Australian Open finalist.

The WTT has tested it’s participants for COVID-19 and subjected them to regular temperature checks, while organizers have permitted a maximum of 500 fans in the 2,500-capacity stadium. Grand Slam winners Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters are among the top draws in the mixed-gender league.
