Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday blasted what he called a lax response by the de Blasio administration, the NYPD and New York University to a huge student party that raged on without interruption in Washington Square Park.

Cuomo noted that NYU draws students from around the world and that seven colleges across the state have already experienced coronavirus outbreaks.

“We say we’re New York tough,” Cuomo fumed during a news conference. “That was not tough. That was not tough by the NYU administration. It was not tough by New York City enforcement. It wasn’t smart.”

A video that surfaced over the Labor Day weekend shows hundreds of young adults violating social-distancing and face-covering rules while drinking and dancing during a Saturday night party around the park’s iconic fountain.

Meanwhile, NYPD patrol vehicles and cops were stationed outside the park but didn’t appear to take any action.

During his remarks, Cuomo also ripped into Mayor Bill de Blasio’s reliance on the small sheriff’s office to handle enforcement.

And he repeated his order mandating colleges to report to the state Health Department if they have more than 100 coronavirus cases and to immediately cancel in-person classes and shift to remote learning only.

NYU has said it’s investigating Saturday night’s party and that “any students who have violated our expectations will be subject to disciplinary action.”

The school also tweeted Saturday that it had suspended more than 20 students for violating coronavirus-related policies, just days after classes resumed there Wednesday.

Neither the NYPD nor NYU immediately responded to requests for comment.
