“#CT sports anchor fired after calling Sen. Tim Scott an ‘Uncle Tom’”
News 12 Connecticut said in a statement on Wednesday that it had canned Fred Gerteiny “as a result of a racially insensitive comment,” referring to a tweet from the reporter earlier that day responding to a story from The Hill.
The website had tweeted a link to a story about Scott, the GOP’s only black senator, saying that President Trump “misspoke” when he told the Proud Boys, a violent right-wing extremist group, to “stand back and stand by” during Tuesday night’s debate.
“Thanks Uncle Tom,” the reporter commented, using the derogatory epithet for a person who betrays their own culture.
In announcing Gerteiny’s removal, the TV-channel said it “has a zero tolerance policy for racism or improper conduct based on race, and prides itself on being an objective and unbiased multi-platform news company.”
Gerteiny, who has since deleted his Twitter account, issued an apology on the platform Wednesday.
“Earlier today, I tweeted a racially insensitive comment, when I referred to @SenatorTimScott as an ‘Uncle Tom,’” Gerteiny tweeted. “I apologize to the Senator, my colleagues @News12CT, and anyone else I may have offended with this deeply offensive tweet.”
