More than 190,000 people in the United States have died from the coronavirus, data released Thursday show.

Fatalities from COVID-19 more than doubled during the warm-weather months, up from nearly 96,000 on Memorial Day, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University.

More than 6.3 million Americans are now infected by COVID-19, according to the university’s numbers.

The country had around 1.6 million cases around the holiday before the summer surge saw infections climb, its data show.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 cases worldwide now stands at more than 27 million with 904,00 deaths.

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned Monday that the world must be better prepared for the next pandemic.

“This will not be the last pandemic,” Tedros told reporters. “History teaches us that outbreaks and pandemics are a fact of life. But when the next pandemic comes, the world must be ready – more ready than it was this time.”
