Two cousins who went missing while paddle-boarding off the coast of Ireland survived the rough waters — by clinging to a buoy of a lobster trap for 15 hours.
Sara Feeney, 23, and Ellen Glynn, 17, were swept out to sea near the tiny island of Inis Oirr on Wednesday night, prompting a major search and rescue mission, according to the Irish Times.
“[It was] horrific, it was the stuff of nightmares,” Feeney’s mother, Helen, said of the ordeal. “You’re just living by the second.”
But the cousins were miraculously spotted — clinging to the buoy — by a local fisherman, Patrick Oliver, and his son the next day.
“They did everything right. They held on to one another, they didn’t lose touch and it can’t have been easy with the night that was in,” Oliver told the paper, in reference to rainy conditions.
Both women, who were were wearing life jackets, suffered no serious injuries. They were taken via helicopter to the University Hospital Galway.
