“#New Jersey boy drowns in lake before start of movie night”
A 4-year-old New Jersey boy drowned at a lake just before the start of movie night in his hometown, officials said.
The boy, identified by relatives as Kyle Meyers, was pronounced dead at a hospital late Friday after cops and bystanders were unable to revive him at Sunset Lake in Bridgewater, Somerset County prosecutors and Bridgewater police said Monday.
A preliminary investigation determined the boy died from accidental drowning. A final autopsy report is pending, authorities said.
The boy’s tragic death occurred “immediately before” movie night was set to begin in Bridgewater, according to an online fundraiser set up by the president of the Sunset Lake Association.
“And several of our members and their children played with Kyle in the hour or so before events unfolded,” the website reads. “As a community, we are deeply wounded.”
Kyle’s aunt, Laurie Wessel, said in a separate fundraiser that her nephew loved to watch cartoons like “Paw Patrol” and enjoyed dancing.
“His smile lit up the room and he loved people,” the website reads. “He had a ready hug for everyone. What a beautiful spirit. I cannot believe he was taken from us so soon.”
Kyle’s mother is “inconsolable” after losing her only child — “her reason for living, her happiness,” Wessel said.
“She is strong, but this is inconceivable,” Wessel wrote. “Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she tries to put one foot in front of the other. It hurts her just to breathe.”
The circumstances of how Kyle went into the lake were unclear Monday, NJ.com reported. Lifeguards are stationed at the 13-acre manmade lake during swimming hours, according to its website.
