#Gawr Gura Swims Past Kizuna AI to Be the Most Subscribed VTuber Ever

In less than a year, the hololive EN affiliated VTuber Gawr Gura has taken the biggest bite out of the VTuber market, crossing oceans to spread her shark ways to the masses, and has finally overtaken the “first” VTuber Kizuna AI to become the most subscribed VTuber ever. Gura passed Kizuna AI yesterday, with both channels updating their subscriber counts overnight, showing Gura’s 2.97 million subscribers to Kizuna AI’s 2.96 million.

Kizuna AI is usually credited as the “first” VTuber, helping to popularize the style that propelled her to the fame that she has seen, though she wasn’t the first 3D avatar-like character on YouTube.

Gura is a member of hololive EN, the EN branch of the VTuber agency that debuted in September 2020. She quickly swam to the top of the company, and eventually on June 30 (which conquencidentally was Kizuna AI‘s 5th birthday) rose to the top of the top. Gura is also close to passing the 3 million subscriber mark, which would mark the first time a VTuber-only channel has done so and the first in the hololive agency.

As a side note: Japanese singer, songwriter, and YouTuber Mafumafu has recently streamed with a virtual avatar sometimes and has more subscribers than either Gura or Kizuna AI, but also streams with a face cam alongside concerts and other produced content, so he doesn’t count.
