The shooting occurred about 9:25 p.m. at the Kingsborough Houses in Crown Heights, sources said.
Police arriving at the scene encountered the suspect and ordered him to drop his gun, sources said.
When the man refused, police opened fire, striking him, sources said.
The condition of the suspect and his shooting victim was not immediately known.
A nearby resident, who identified himself only as Champ, said he saw police helping a man who was shot in the leg when gunfire rang out.
“Then I got the hell out of dodge,” he said.
Champ said that the shooting “was totally isolated” and there were no protests in the area leading up to it.
A gun was recovered at the scene, sources said.
