#Concept Art for Live-Action Gundam Movie Released

A piece of concept art for the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam live-action movie has been released. The concept art depicts the titular Gundam mobile suit standing amidst flames.

The Sunrise and Legendary co-production will be distributed by Legendary in China, while Netflix will stream the movie in the rest of the world. The staff includes Kong: Skull Island‘s Jordan Vogt-Roberts as director and producer and Y: The Last Man author Brian K. Vaughan as scriptwriter.

The original Mobile Suit Gundam anime first aired in 1979. Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the show was both the first Gundam anime and the first to take place in the Universal Century setting. Since its release, there have been multiple sequels and spin-offs set during Universal Century as well as shows set after the UC timeline, in addition to numerous Gundam series like Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and Mobile Suit Gundam Seed that take place in entirely different settings. 

In September, three new Gundam anime projects were announced for 2022.

The Gundam franchise also includes other media like manga, novels, and video games. Another notable part of the franchise are the plastic models, commonly known as Gunpla, which date back to 1980 and remain popular today.

Crunchyroll describes the Mobile Suit Gundam anime as:

Universal Century 0079. The rebel space colonies of the Principality of Zeon launch a war of independence against the Earth Federation, using humanoid fighting vehicles called mobile suits to overwhelm the Federation Forces and conquer half of Earth’s surface. Months later, the Federation has finally developed its own prototype mobile suits at a remote space colony. But when the colony suffers a Zeon surprise attack, these new weapons fall into the hands of a motley crew of civilians and cadets. Fate places a youth named Amuro Ray at the controls of the white mobile suit Gundam…
