“#Chuck Schumer makes history”
On Wednesday, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer made history by becoming the US Senate’s first Jewish majority leader after Vice President Kamala Harris swore in three new senators. Schumer takes control of a Senate split 50-50, with the veep casting the tie-breaking vote.
Georgia Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff and California’s Sen. Alex Padilla made history, too. Warnock is the first black Democratic senator elected from a former Confederate state, while Ossoff is the first Jewish senator in Georgia history. Padilla, tapped by Gov. Gavin Newsom to fill the remainder of Harris’ term, is the first Mexican American to represent California in the Senate.
It was a remarkable day that demonstrated that the great American experiment in representative government endures. For all the talk of racism, white privilege and disunity, the United States continues to make strides toward becoming a more perfect — and representative — union.
Let us hope that the new majority leader can resist the radical left’s agenda. Finding common ground with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) with the nation facing a deadly pandemic and other crises is vital to making good on President Biden’s promise to “restore the soul” of the country.
Getting Americans vaccinated against the coronavirus and jumpstarting the economy are the two most pressing priorities.
We’re counting on you, Chuck.
