“Christina Ricci Joins Netflix’s ‘Addams Family’ Inspired Spinoff”

Netflix’s Addams Family-inspired spinoff Wednesday is turning to Christina Ricci for a new role, as the actress knows a thing or two about the titular character.

Ricci played Wednesday Addams in the 1990s The Addams Family movie franchise, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. The actress will be a series regular in Wednesday, which has Jenna Ortega headlining as the iconic character.

The live-action series from Tim Burton will see Ricci take on a new role that isn’t an older version of Wednesday. It’s unclear yet what role that will be, but according to Deadline, Ricci’s character is one that was previously handed to Thora Birch before she left the production.

Netflix confirmed Ricci’s casting with a tweet, writing, “Yes, it’s true — the magnificent Christina Ricci is joining the cast of the new Wednesday Addams series as an exciting new character *snap snap*.”

Production on the highly-anticipated series has been underway for some time and is currently slated to wrap in Romania later this month. According to Deadline, Ricci has been filming for several weeks on the project.

The coming-of-age comedy follows Wednesday Addams during her years at Nevermore Academy and is described as a sleuthing and supernatural mystery from co-creators Al Gough and Miles Millar. Burton will direct all installments of the show, which along with Ortega features Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams and Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams.

Along with joining Wednesday, Ricci currently stars in Showtime’s hit new series Yellowjackets, which will return for a second season.
