Childish Gambino is one of Hip Hop’s most elusive figures. The 38-year-old multi-hyphenate known in Hollywood by his government Donald Glover  etched out a formidable lane for himself in Hip Hop on top of building a successful career in television and film. At this point, there’s not much for Gambino to do besides look back on his work.

During a special conversation with Interview Magazine where Childish Gambino interviewed himself, the rapper looked back on his first two projects, Camp and Because The Internet, claiming one was better than the other. Although he liked Camp, it wasn’t enough to satisfy his hunger to create.

“I like parts of that album, and I learned so much,” Childish Gambino said. “Mostly that concept doesn’t outshine content. But when they’re in equilibrium, it’s extremely potent. I don’t think I was clear on that album, and the songs weren’t catchy enough for me. Made it feel like novelty.”

He added, “But it allowed me to make Because the Internet, which I think has proven itself to be a classic. It’s the rap OK Computer. It’s prescient in tone and subject matter and it’s extremely influential. And I know no one’s gonna give me that until I’m dead. But it’s true.”

Because The Internet gave Childish Gambino his first top 10 Billboard 200 album when it debuted at No. 7 and spawned four singles in “3005,” “Crawl,” “Sweatpants” and “Telegraph Ave.” It would go on and put Childish Gambino on a bigger platform and help open the door for more opportunities for him.

Elsewhere in the interview, Childish Gambino revealed he’s still recording new music and working on his film career. On the music side, he’s producing and doing features for others, and in the TV/film space, he’s working on projects with Dominique Fishback, Damson Idris and Chloe Bailey.
