The Chicago Bulls announced that they will be relieving head coach Jim Boylen of his duties Friday morning.

Boylen, who has coached the Bulls since Fred Hoiberg was fired in 2018, had a rough tenure with the team during his year-plus at the helm. He compiled a 39-84 record, which is the second-worst winning percentage for a coach in Bulls history.

“After doing a comprehensive evaluation and giving the process the time it deserved, I ultimately decided that a fresh approach and evolution in leadership was necessary,” Chicago executive VP Arturas Karnisovas said in a statement Friday. “This was a very difficult decision, but it is time for our franchise to take that next step as we move in a new direction and era of Chicago Bulls basketball.”

Karnisovas, hired in April, has been part of a larger organizational rebuild, which now includes a coaching search.

Boylen clashed with several players during his time in Chicago. Just a week into his tenure, his players threatened a mutiny after he forced them to do a conditioning practice the day after a back-to-back.

Recently, rookie forward Daniel Gafford ripped the coach during a Twitch stream, saying: “I don’t like him a lot, but he OK. Got some things he can work on, got some things he can get better at as a person and as a coach.”

Boylen has also been the subject of ire from Bulls fans, who predictably rejoiced on social media after he was fired.
