Chainsaw Man

With 2021 nearing a close, Twitter Japan took a look back at the year that has passed and compiled a list of its top trends in its annual Trend Awards – with some surprising results! Being Japan, of course, anime filled out the ranks, with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Evangelion, and Pui Pui Molcar, but even then, other top events dominated the trending landscape, leaving the higher trends filled with some of the biggest news from the last year.

Here are the full top 20 trending topics in Japan from 2021 (translated into English):

20. Gundam

19. JUJUTSU KAISEN

18. Landslide (on July 3, a landslide flowed through Atami City in Shizuoka that left 26 people dead and 1 still missing)

17. My Hero Academia

16. Umamusume

15. Derby (Horse racing, which got more popular in Japan during the pandemic)

14. Common Test (a new university exam for everyone was implemented for the first time)

13. Evangelion

12. Chainsaw Man

11. Diamond and Pearl Remakes

10. Upper 6 (on the Japanese Shindo earthquake scale)

9. Smash Bros.

8. Oberon (from Fate/Grand Order)

7. Welfare (for support during COVID-19)

6. Vertical Thumbnails (Twitter updating their platform for portrait-oriented image)

5. Gakki (Short name for Japanese actress and model Yui Aragaki, who married Gen Hoshino this year)

4. Molcar

3. Mugen Train

2. State of Emergency (to deal with COVID-19)

1. Gold Medal (Due to the 2020 Tokyo Games in 2021)

While seeing Demon Slayer: Mugen Train so high up on the list doesn’t surprise anyone, having Chainsaw Man beat out both Evangelion (the highest-grossing movie in Japan for 2021), as well as JUJUTSU KAISEN, shows that Chainsaw Man will be a monster hit when the TV anime starts airing in 2022.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba also won “Most Retweeted” for its announcement of the Entertainment District arc back in February with over 220,000 retweets for the first teaser trailer and visual.

Meanwhile, Chainsaw Man manga creator Tatsuki Fujimoto also achieved the special prize with his one-shot manga Look Back, which went viral in July when it was released on the Shonen Jump+ platform, gaining 4 million views in a mere two days.

Tokyo Revengers, while not appearing in the Top 20, won the “Anime Award” for 2021 for its popularity during the TV anime broadcast of the first season and the release of the live-action film, which was the 4th highest-grossing film in the region for the year.
