Through one lens, it was a magical game-winning shot by OG Anunoby. Through the other, it was a “f–ing disgrace.”
With 0.5 seconds on the clock, Anunoby got open to catch an inbounds pass and drain a 3 to lift the Raptors to 104-103 win over the Celtics in Game 3 of their playoff series Thursday night.
But Celtics wing Jaylen Brown was left lamenting that Anunoby shouldn’t have been so wide open to receive the cross-court pass from Kyle Lowry.
“It’s a f–ing disgrace at the end of the game,” Brown told reporters after Boston’s shot at a 3-0 series lead slipped through their fingers. “That was just terrible. No way we should have lost that game. I take responsibility for that. Not just that play, but a lot of the plays before. It happens. It’s the NBA playoffs. Either you let them gain momentum or you come back and get ready to play next game.”
Brown was guarding Pascal Siakim on the inbound as Anunoby snuck behind him on the baseline. Jayson Tatum could be seen motioning toward Anunoby, trying to alert Brown to take him, but the message didn’t get through, leaving Anunoby all alone in the corner to take the pass from Lowry and let it fly. Brown tried to race over and defend the shot, but it was too late.
“Just a miscommunication, the coverage that we were in,” Brown said. “That’s all that really is. They made a remarkable play at the end.
“We gotta be better than that. We gotta communicate better. Me being four years in, I gotta be better. Can’t give up the 3 at the end of the game. … He made a remarkable shot, but still.”
