#CBS’s Magnum PI is tentatively set to resume filming in August

Magnum PI, the CBS drama, will soon begin filming its third season

Magnum PI, the CBS reboot of the original 1980s drama that starred Tom Selleck, will tentatively begin filming Season 3 episodes in mid-August. The series films in Hawaii which, at present, has the lowest COVID-19 cases in any of the United States.

Magnum PI stars Jay Hernandez and Perdita Weeks and follows an ex-Navy Seal and private investigator who solves crimes on the island of Hawaii. Since Hawaii Five-0 wrapped its 10 season run in April of this year, Magnum PI will be the only television series filming on the island. And despite some unfavorable reviews from critics, the drama brought in 6.6 million viewers last season after being moved to Friday nights.

Filming for Magnum PI will be subject to restrictions

Currently, Hawaii imposes a 14-day self-isolation for anyone flying in from outside the state, but that only runs until the end of July. Beginning in August, anyone coming in from outside the state must have a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of arrival to avoid the 14-day quarantine.

The Hawaii State Department of Health is concerned over the report of an additional 29 cases on July 3. At least five of those cases are linked to three gatherings in the state, and with Hawaii re-opening to tourism on Aug. 1, any further increase could potentially prevent production.

There is additional concern over the seemingly lackadaisical attitudes about the virus. According to  Dr. Scott Miscovich of Premier Medical Group Hawaii, he was on two flights that were filled to maximum capacity, and passengers were taking off their masks mid-flight as if there wasn’t a pandemic going on. This could cause a rise in cases on the island and threaten production.
