Paramount+ has scheduled to finally air the Halo television series in 2022. With the release of the highly anticipated video-game, Halo Infinite, fan interest in the franchise is the highest it has been in many years. A television series based on the Halo video-game franchise has been in development purgatory for years, having been announced in 2013 and previously scheduled for a 2015 release. The production previously experienced numerous delays and an ever-changing creative team.

While Halo Infinite is the sixth main installment in the game series, it is unknown whether the Halo television series will take place in the same universe as the games. Halo Infinite features the Banished as the central antagonists, taking place approximately eight years after the end of the Human-Covenant War. The Halo television series will not be taking place in the same time period as Infinite, as the events of the series will instead occur during the time of the UNSC and Covenant conflict.

Development of Paramount’s Halo Series

Human Covenant War

The Paramount+ Halo series does not mark the first time the franchise has ventured into live-action. During the Halo 3 era, film director Neill Blomkamp worked with Bungie on Halo’s first live-action project, Halo: Landfall. Landfall was received positively among Halo fans, encouraging many to express their desire to see more of their favorite franchise in live-action. This lead to a Halo film adaptation produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Blomkamp being planned, but never materialized due to lack of financing. According to VICE, Blomkamp’s 2009 film District 9 used film props originally meant for use in the scrapped Halo film project.

Microsoft Studios and 343 Industries have previously worked on the live-action Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn and Halo: Nightfall web series. The Halo franchise is recognized for its impressive live-action adverts including the gritty short film, “The Life”, to promote Halo 3: ODST. Halo: Reach, Halo 4, Halo 5: Guardians, and Halo Infinite have also received live-action adverts, continuing to showcase the potential of a Halo film or television series.

Premium American television network, Showtime, was originally set to be the home network for the live-action Halo television series. In 2021, as reported in an article by Variety, it was announced that the series would be moved to Paramount Plus. Kiki Wolfkill, who oversees transmedia at 343 Industries, has cited HBO’s Game of Thrones as inspiration for the series. According to Wolfkill, Halo will be a “character-driven drama against extraordinary Halo worldbuilding” and integrate a “high-budget, high-fidelity story.” Wolfkill repeatedly referenced Game of Thrones when describing their creative process behind Halo.

“We talk about Game of Thrones a lot in terms of scope, scale, and complexity of relationships because a lot of the background of Halo is sort of political drama […] and it’s something that you touch on really lightly in the games and see more deeply in some of the other mediums. So in something like a Game of Thrones, some of that complexity is interesting.”

The Confirmed Cast of Paramount’s Halo Series

The Wire‘s Pablo Schreiber plays John-117, the Master Chief, in Paramount’s Halo television series. Schreiber is the first actor in the franchise’s live-action history to represent the face of the Master Chief, with the exception of a young John in the Halo 3 “Starry Night” and Halo 4 “Scanned” television ads. Schreiber is well-known for his roles as George Mendez on Orange Is the New Black, William Lewis on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Mad Sweeney in American Gods.

Additionally, Natascha McElhone from Showtime’s Californication and Jen Taylor will play Dr. Catherine Halsey and Cortana, respectively. In fact, McElhone was originally cast to play both Cortana and Dr. Halsey, but the pandemic prevented her from being able to finish her work as Cortana. As such, Taylor was brought in to replace McElhone as Cortana.

Rounding out the cast are Danny Sapani (Penny Dreadful) as Captain Jacob Keyes, Olive Gray as Miranda Keyes, and acclaimed Hindi film actress, Shabana Azmi, as Admiral Margaret Paragonsky. John-117 will be joined by other Spartans from the SPARTAN-II program. Joining the Master Chief will be Fargo‘s Bokeem Kobine as Spartan Soren-066. Marvel fans may recognize Kobine from his role as Herman Schultz, the Shocker, in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Natasha Culzac will appear as Spartan Riz-028, along with Kate Kennedy as Spartan Kai-125 and Bentley Kalu as new character Spartan Vannak-134.

The Hollywood Reporter has previously reported that newcomer Australian actress, Yerin Ha, will appear as Quan Ah. Quan Ah is described as a “shrewd, audacious 16-year-old from the Outer Colonies who meets Master Chief at a fateful time for them both.” Irish actress, Charlie Murphy, has been reported by Deadline to play Makee, a human orphan that was raised by the Covenant and harbors a deep hatred for humanity. Quan Ah, Makee, and Spartan Vannak-134 are brand new characters never seen before in the Halo universe.

Where the Series Takes Place in the Halo Timeline, and What Happens

High Charity Halo Paramount Series

The time period of the Halo television series does not align with the present time period in the Halo video games. Because the television series takes place during the Human-Covenant War, the episodes will take place before the end of Halo 3 and not around the timeframe of Halo Infinite which takes place nearly a decade after the end of the Human-Covenant War. Cortana is one of the most iconic characters in the Halo franchise and is best known as the Master Chief’s invaluable A.I. assistant. Preceding the events of Halo Infinite, Cortana plays an antagonistic role towards Master Chief and the UNSC after suffering from a condition called rampancy. Her turn to a villainous role in Halo 5: Guardians was met with a mixed fan reception. Paramount and 343 Industries will be portraying Cortana in their television series as the intelligent, friendly A.I. she is best recognized as.

The first official trailer revealed High Charity, the Covenant’s homeworld that was prominently featured in Halo 2. High Charity was taken over by the parasitic Flood and destroyed by the Master Chief in Halo 3.

Whether or not the television series takes place in the same universe featured in the games, web series, novels, and comics remains unclear. However, 343 Industries have stated that they intend to do something new with the Master Chief and with Halo. Paramount’s Halo television series will reintroduce fans to the epic mid-26th century battle between the UNSC and the alien alliance known as the Covenant, the conflict featured in Halo Wars, Halo: Reach, and the original Halo trilogy. Viewers will see humanity as they fight against overwhelming odds for survival.
