#Canadian katana killer arrested following Halloween slashing spree

Police have identified the man who was arrested in Canada early Sunday morning after he allegedly went on a vicious Halloween night killing spree with a katana.

Carl Girouard, 24, allegedly killed two people and wounded five others while dressed in a medieval outfit Saturday night in Quebec City’s historic downtown area.

Girouard was taken into custody just before 1 a.m. on Sunday morning, less than a mile away from the attacks. Steve Jolicoeur, a freelance photographer, witnessed the arrest and said the swordsman “was in black clothes, like a ninja.”

Police said Girouard traveled from the Montreal area to the city to inflict as much damage as possible.

“Last night we were thrust into a night of horror when a 24-year-old man who does not live in Quebec City came here with the clear intention of taking as many victims as possible,” Quebec Police Chief Robert Pigeon said.

Girouard had no criminal record before the attack, but shared his intentions to commit this type of crime over five years ago “in a medical context,” according to police.

The two victims killed were identified as 56-year-old old François Duchesne and 61-year old Suzanne Clermont. According to a neighbor, Clermont stepped outside to smoke a cigarette when she was attacked.

Duchesne, an employee at the Musee National des Beaux-Arts du Quebec, was described as having his throat slashed.

The other five victims were admitted to a hospital.

“Some have very significant lacerations but we do not fear for their lives,” Pigeon said.

Girouard faces two counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder.
