New York Rangers rookie goaltender Igor Shesterkin traveled back to New York from Florida this past weekend as coronavirus cases soared in the Sunshine State over the last week, the team confirmed to The Post on Tuesday.

If cleared to play after getting tested for COVID-19 under the NHL’s ‘Return-to-Play’ protocol, Shesterkin is expected to be back on the ice at the Rangers’ practice facility in Tarrytown sometime this week.

As Phase 2 of the NHL’s restart plan commenced on June 8, when team practice facilities reopened for voluntary small-group workouts, Shesterkin remained in Florida and was last seen practicing at Pines Ice Arena in Pembroke Pines, Fla., on June 11 in a series of videos posted to Instagram.

The 24-year-old Russian netminder was able to take some shots from Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin and retired Rangers defenseman Darius Kasparaitis. Other players at the informal workout included Avalanche defenseman Nikita Zadorov and Panthers winger Evgenii Dadonov.

Since it was an informal workout at a non-NHL facility, the players did not have to abide by the Phase 2 rule of skating in groups of less than six.

Pavel Buchnevich also returned to New York recently and is undergoing protocol before he, too, is expected to be back on the ice later this week. Newsday reported Monday that rookie winger Kaapo Kakko and goalie Alexandar Georgiev are planning to travel from Finland to New York on Friday.

Rangers that have been in the New York area and regularly participating in small-group workouts include Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider, Brendan Smith, Brendan Lemieux, Marc Staal, Adam Fox and Philip Di Giuseppe.

On Tuesday, the Florida Department of Health revealed that the number of known coronavirus cases in the state rose by 3,289 since Monday morning. There were 64 more COVID-19 deaths in Florida since Monday’s update, bringing the total number for the state to at least 3,237.
