#Brazil’s health minister Marcelo Queiroga tests positive for COVID in NYC

Brazil’s Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga tested positive for COVID-19 hours after attending the UN General Assembly in the Big Apple on Tuesday, government officials said.

Queiroga will now quarantine in the city for the next 14 days and Brazilian diplomats will not attend meetings at the annual gathering until Friday, CNN Brasil reported.

The health minister is part of the Brazilian delegation accompanying President Jair Bolsonaro, who opened up the General Assembly with a speech on Tuesday.

“The minister is doing well,” a statement from Brazil’s communications office said. The rest of the delegation tested negative for the virus.

During his stay, Queiroga was reportedly filmed shaking hands with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson — who on Tuesday met with President Joe Biden at the White House, according to journalist Raquel Krähenbühl.

Queiroga told CNN Brasil that he is doing fine.

Bolsonaro has faced criticism for being the sole unvaccinated G20 leader.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday blasted Bolsonaro for attending the General Assembly despite not receiving the jab.

“We need to send a message to all the world leaders, including most notably Bolsonaro from Brazil, that if you intend to come here, you need to be vaccinated,” de Blasio said while holding his daily briefing.

“If you don’t want to be vaccinated, don’t bother coming because everyone should be safe together.”
