Atlanta lost its ace Mike Soroka for the season after he suffered a torn Achilles tendon while running to cover first base in the third inning of the Mets’ 7-2 win at Truist Park on Monday night.
The 23-year-old righty crumbled to the grass after taking his first step after a J.D. Davis ground ball. Soroka yelled in pain after trying to take a few steps after that, but ended up needing the assistance of a trainer and Braves manager Brian Snitker to get off the field.
Soroka is one of the NL East’s top pitchers and one of the game’s best young players. Soroka finished second behind Pete Alonso for the NL Rookie of the Year award last season and sixth in the Cy Young voting as Jacob deGrom won his second straight.
Soroka was 0-1 with a 3.95 ERA over three starts this season after going 13-4 with a 2.68 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP while helping the Braves win the NL East title in 2019.
The Mets saw Jeff McNeil scratched before the game and Robinson Cano and Amed Rosario leave early with injuries.
